Nomination

Hello there!
I hope that you are all doing wonderful. Aside from all of the negative news we are hearing regarding COVID-19, I would like to tell you about some pleasant news. I am a second year Biochemistry student who is taking a genetics course with professor Montpetit. I would like to formally nominate Dr. Colin Montpetit for incorporating CSL in his course.
This professor is excellent. He not only goes above and beyond in his teaching to ensure students' understanding, he provides so many opportunities for students. He has modules online for students to learn the material at their own pace. He does group discussions for the purpose of allowing students to engage with each other and do well together. You can basically say that his goal is students' success. He also has the amazing CSL opportunity in which students do not have to do the laboratory component. Instead, students are to volunteer at a genetics related placement to gain other valuable experience that will not be gained in the lab.
Having done CSL, I have been benefited in so many ways. I was able to enhance my time management skills as I had to make sure I finish a certain number of hours in addition to school work. I was able to increase my knowledge in the field of optometry, the impacts of genetics disease on vision and most importantly to learn about the tools and equipment that are available nowadays to aid people who are visually impaired. Lastly, by doing this placement, I was able to ameliorate my interpersonal skills and manage working in stressful environments where kids are ill, unhappy, and/or challenged because of their lack of vision.
Furthermore, the fact that the professor allowed CSL to count for course credit made me more tempted to try it out. This really made me go out of my comfort zone for the purpose of learning. I would have not done that by myself. Being a Biochemistry student, I am very limited by my heavy course load to engage in extracurricular activities and Dr. Montpetit made that possible!
Because of all of this, I strongly believe that he should get the award. He is very selfless and does great things and he expects nothing in return. He is very friendly and just. He does what’s right and what he thinks is best even though what he is doing might not be the norm. For instance, he is the only biology professor offering CSL. He has spent so much time making sure that students are paired up in good placements and spent so much time helping us with our concerns regarding our placements.
I strongly believe that Dr. Montpetit is an excellent candidate for this award and that his work should be recognized more. Who knows, maybe other science professors would use him as an exemplar and choose to incorporate CSL in their course as well!
Do not forget to stay healthy and safe!
